There comes a point in every political movement when its champions stop proclaiming their beliefs and start running from them. That moment may have arrived for the Left’s transgender crusade. And proof of this came during the one and only Virginia gubernatorial debate Thursday evening between Democrat Abigail Spanberger and Republican Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears.
Confronted with a simple, straightforward question about whether biological males should be allowed to use girls’ bathrooms and compete on girls’ sports teams, Spanberger delivered a masterclass in deflection, evasion, and political cowardice.
When the moderator asked if biological males who identify as transgender should be “allowed to use girls’ bathrooms and play on girls’ sports teams in K through 12,” Spanberger outright refused to explain her position.
“In cases across Virginia, I think it’s incumbent upon parents and educators and administrators in each local community to make decisions,” she said, before trailing off as Earle-Sears interjected, “Nude men in locker rooms. That’s what this is about.”
Spanberger awkwardly tried to regain control: “There should never be nude men… in locker rooms.”
“We finally have her saying that!” Earle-Sears pounced. “But you voted for that.”
Of course, Spanberger hadn't answered the question, and the moderator pressed her again to clarify her position. “Would you rescind the Youngkin administration policy requiring boys and girls to use bathrooms aligning with their biological sex?” he asked.
Spanberger repeated the same vague talking points.
“My priority would be to ensure that local communities — importantly, parents and teachers and educators — are able to work together to meet the unique needs of each school and each community,” she said, dodging the actual question yet again.
Earle-Sears cut in: “That’s a yes or no.”
Spanberger still wouldn’t answer. Instead, she pivoted. “And I say that as a mother of three daughters in Virginia public schools, and as someone who used to investigate crimes against children. The way that we keep our children safe is by ensuring they are safe in schools, which includes funding law enforcement and public safety, and it’s—”
ICYMI: The Virginia Gubernatorial Debate Was a Disaster for Spanberger
The moderator stopped her cold: “But Ms. Spanberger, the question was, would you rescind the Youngkin administration policy requiring boys and girls to use bathrooms aligning with their biological sex?”
Pressed yet again for clarity, Spanberger still refused to say whether she supported or opposed the policy. “In each local community, decisions should be made between parents and educators and teachers, uh, in each community. It shouldn’t be dictated by politicians,” she said.
Here's the exchange where Abigail Spanberger is unable to simply say that men should not be allowed to change in the same locker rooms as girls.

What makes this exchange so revealing is that it’s not about confusion; it’s about calculation. Democrats like Spanberger know that allowing biological males into girls’ bathrooms and locker rooms is deeply unpopular with voters across party lines. They know that women — especially mothers — overwhelmingly oppose these policies. But they also know that standing up against radical transgender ideology would earn them the wrath of the far-left activists who dominate their base and their donor network. So, instead of answering honestly, Spanberger tried to have it both ways, pretending to support “local control” while carefully avoiding any statement that could be labeled “transphobic” by the woke crowd. It’s political cowardice, pure and simple.
The exchange is a microcosm of where the Democratic Party is today — terrified of its own base, trapped by radical activists, and incapable of taking a moral stand on an issue that should be obvious to anyone with common sense. Earle-Sears wasn’t afraid to unequivocally oppose the radical transgender agenda.
Spanberger’s debate meltdown made one thing crystal clear: the tide has turned. Democrats once proudly declared that “trans women are women” and demanded boys be allowed in girls’ locker rooms; now, they can’t even say it out loud. What used to be their favorite slogan has become political poison. When candidates start mumbling about “local control” instead of shouting about “trans rights,” you know common sense is winning. The transgender cult may still own the Democratic Party, but it no longer owns the American people.
