Are We Underestimating the Democrats in 2024?

If you’ve been paying any attention to the presidential election at all, you know that things are looking great for Donald Trump. Frankly, it’s easy to look at what’s happening now and convince ourselves that Joe Biden will be shown the door next November. But maybe we shouldn't be so confident.

I'm not saying that things don't look great now. Trump's leading in the polls and by a higher spread in the RealClearPolitics average than at any time in this campaign. This is actually a big deal because in 2020 he never led in the RealClearPolitics average. Knowing that polling has a history of underestimating Trump's support, it’s pretty significant that Trump is performing as well as he is.

And then there’s the fact that many prominent Democrats are sounding the alarm about Joe Biden and even urging him to drop out.

But I'm urging you all not to take this election for granted, as anything can happen. It may seem cliché to say so, but a year ago everyone was predicting a red wave in the midterm elections -- and we all know how that turned out.

Are we heading into the same trap in 2024 as we ended up in in 2022?

In a recent episode of "The Jesse Kelly Show," host Jesse Kelly warned that "2024, for people on the right, is going to be a hard year no matter what" and insisted that for everyone who keeps talking about the poll numbers right now, 2024 is going to be brutal."

He and guest Steve Deace argued that Trump is destined to be tried and convicted on the dubious charges brought by leftist prosecutors with leftist juries, and that this will inevitably create a new wave of legal battles for Trump. These legal battles, such as a new effort to remove him from the ballot in various states, will deplete financial resources away from his campaign. This will ultimately allow Democrats to amass a massive war chest to get Joe Biden reelected, while Trump's resources will be split between his campaign and his legal battles. This will not only hurt Trump in the presidential election, but will also hurt Republicans down-ballot.

"This is the plan, and if you have a brain and you're willing to see it objectively, it is very obvious," Steve Deace insisted. "Now, it's not a foolproof plan. These people are largely fools. They just look brilliant because they often go unopposed. When you're not opposed, you look brilliant, you win every chess match when the other guy doesn't make any moves."

Deace continued, "So we don't have to sit here and suffer this fate, but we need a plan, and our plan needs to be more than 'this gets me the most clicks on Twitter,' 'this gets me the most votes on iTunes,' 'this gets me booked on Fox News tonight.' We're gonna need more than a plan tonight, Jesse, because the people we're up against are not simply doing this for profit or it's a business, but it's a real movement. It's a dark one, and they're going to execute their plan no matter how many clicks you're accumulating over here."

Deace pointed to the 2022 midterms as proof of how the right underestimates the left.

Deace also argued that Hunter Biden's current legal troubles are a ruse, designed to give Democrats the upper hand on messaging.

"They're gonna say, 'Hey, we indicted Hunter Biden first; we prosecuted Hunter Biden first. We put Hunter Biden in prison first. We're not partisan. We're actually the ones cleaning up the corruption. It's the Republicans who are partisan. They want to let Hunter Biden get prosecuted, but Donald Trump goes free.' They're gonna actually gaslight themselves as the arbiter of fairness."

It's an interesting theory, though I think Deace forgets the fact that Hunter Biden nearly got a Get Out Jail Free card. That said, I think the underlying point is that conservatives shouldn't take the 2024 election for granted and that Democrats will use any trick at their disposal to make sure Trump doesn't win.

Make no mistake about it, we underestimate the Democrats and their sliminess at our own peril.
