Some people try to avoid politics at family events, but one Michigan couple decided to go all in with a MAGA-theme wedding on Independence Day.

Audra Johnson and her husband Jeff got married on July 4. Their wedding was filled with red, white, and blue decor to fit the holiday and Audra’s bridesmaids even dressed in the patriotic colors.

During the ceremony, Audra wore a traditional white wedding gown, but changed into another white dress featuring the words “Make America Great Again” on the front, and “Trump” in the back.

“We love our country and our president. To us, it wasn’t any different than any other themed wedding,” Audra told Fox 35.

After posting her wedding photos to Facebook, Audra says she began to get a lot of hateful comments, but tried to have a sense of humor about it.

“And the fun begins! Hehehe! Best wedding gift ever!” she captioned a post featuring comments criticizing her Trump-themed wedding.

Not everyone at the wedding was on board with the theme, however, and one important person didn’t even attend. The bride’s lifelong friend and maid of honor, a Democrat, couldn’t bring herself to wear a MAGA hat.  “We were gonna do our photos with the Trump hats and she said, ‘You know I love you, but I can’t wear the Trump hat,'” Johnson said. So, the maid of honor wore a plain red hat instead.  The groom’s father, however, refused to attend. “He sent us a text message. It said, ‘As long as you support that racist in the White House, I won’t be attending your wedding.’ Which is sad but we did have a lot of people that loved us and showed up.”
