Hillary Clinton called for a reinstatement of the “assault weapons” ban during several media interviews on Monday.
The Wall Street Journal reports: “Mrs. Clinton, in calling for the revival of the 1994 federal ban, said the Orlando gunman ‘used a weapon of war’ to massacre innocent Americans.”
“In this particular case, he was interviewed more than once because of reports of what he was saying, yet he had absolutely no trouble walking in and buying an assault weapon,” Mrs. Clinton said on ABC News.
“We cannot fall into the trap set by the gun lobby that says if you can’t stop every shooting and every incident you should not try to stop any,” Clinton said on NBC. “That is not how laws work. It’s not common sense. We need to get these weapons of war off the streets. We had an assault weapons ban, it expired, and we need to reinstate it.”
The “assault weapons ban” did not actually ban “assault weapons”; rather, it banned some firearms and certain features on other firearms. Banned features included cosmetic and superficial elements such as the collapsible stock (adjusts the length of a gun) and a bayonet lug (for attaching a bayonet).
Here’s a great piece by Bob Owens at Bearing Arms that discusses whether an “assault weapons” ban would have stopped the Orlando shooter.
His answer is “probably not.” Aside from the fact that a terrorist determined to kill people could have stabbed or blown up the night club, Owens explains: “Put bluntly, the Clinton ‘assault weapon’ ban was a paper tiger that protected no one. The same holds true for the ‘assault weapon’ bans so frequently and impotently proposed by President Obama or Democrat front-runner Hillary Clinton.”
Meanwhile, keep an eye on the firearms industry. I expect another sales boom.
