New York to Repeal Tax on Tampons, Feminine Hygiene Products

The New York state Senate has approved legislation that would exempt feminine hygiene products from taxation. Governor Cuomo is set to sign the legislation.

“Repealing this regressive and unfair tax on women is a matter of social and economic justice,” Cuomo said in a statement. “I look forward to signing it into law.”

The legislation passed the Senate unanimously. The bill was sponsored by Sen. Sue Serino (R) and Assemblywoman Linda Rosenthal (D).

Supporters of the piece of garbage bill say that feminine hygiene products are a necessity and should not be taxed.

What other necessities can we look forward to getting a tax exemption? Water? Food? Those are also biological necessities.

“There are many issues that simply transcend politics, and a unanimous vote in both houses tells you that this is certainly one of them,” Serino said. “Moving this legislation forward is a win for consumers and it’s a win for women who have largely shouldered the burden of the tax for generations.”

This issue does not “transcend” politics unless the New York politicos plan to remove taxes on all products that are “biological necessities” including the ones for men.
