A 7-Year-Old Showed Up to School With Something Really Unusual

Seven-year-old Anu just showed up to school with something really cool. The way her friends reacted to it, you would think she brought along a new toy or game to show them. But what she really had was her brand new prosthetic leg.

Little Anu lost her leg shortly after she was born. For years she wore a regular prosthetic leg in its place. But her cool new pink “sports blade” allows her to do all of the things that other seven-year-olds get to do: She can now run, dance, and play just like her friends. And the best part is that her friends’ reaction to her new leg is awesome. They do nothing to make her feel uncomfortable or different. They’re excited for her and then just continue on with their playing. Kids are pretty great in that way.

A leg like Anu’s, though, isn’t cheap. It can cost as much as $2500-4000 and must be custom-made every few years as she grows. Luckily there are organizations that help with the costs of such prosthetics. The National Health Service of England currently pays for them, but unfortunately, they are in danger of losing funding because of an upcoming election.

But according to Scary Mommy, there are other organizations helping kids who need prosthetics:

According to The Independent, the company Open Bionics and others like them are doing their part to turn perceived disabilities into superhero transformations for kids. Their company decided to partner with Disney to create robotic hands for children in need with themes like Iron Man and Star Wars.

“The power of these prosthetics is that the public perception is completely different. All of a sudden they’re not being asked how they lost their hand, they’re being asked where they got their cool robot hand, how does it feel, and how does it work? It completely flips the perception 180 degrees. What might have been perceived as their greatest weakness is seen as their greatest strength,” a company representative said.
