Continuing a plan to get through the entire Bible in a year, follow as I journal through the reading. I have chosen a straightforward approach that begins in Genesis and ends in Revelation. This will not be an in-depth study or a comprehensive commentary. There are plenty of sources for such material. This is stage one Bible reading, taking the text at face value and sharing impressions.
Today’s reading comes from the book of Joshua, chapters 16 through 18, listing how the Promised Land was divided among Israel. Some impressions from the text:
- These chapters are fairly dry, further chronicling how the Promised Land was divided up as an inheritance for the twelve tribes of Israel.
- This sort of account stands alongside genealogies and other histories as relatively dry record-keeping. It is nonetheless important because it chronicles how God fulfilled his promises to Abraham, Issac, and Jacob.
- While this apportioning may make for dry reading today, the reality it conveys would have been momentous for the Israelites. This was the end of a multi-generational journey through the wilderness and fulfillment of promises which had been passed down for generations prior. There’s no analog for it today, aside from the promise believers have of grace in the presence of God after death.
