President Luddite Blames Job Loss on Technological Innovation

Here we go again, as Jim Hoft writes, “Oh Brother… Obama Blames Internet For Unemployment” — plus ATMs:

OBAMA: One of the challenges in terms of rebuilding our economy is – businesses have gotten so efficient, that, uh, when was the last time somebody went to a bank teller? Instead of using an ATM. Or, used a travel agent instead of going online. A lot of jobs out that that used to require people now have become automated.

Yes, those Websites and ATMs just magically appear. No one needs to program them, maintain them, or update them. It’s magic!

Besides, you shouldn’t be traveling anyhow. Best leave that for the president and first lady.

Don’t worry though, if past performance is any indication, automation will be cool once again. It all depends on which audience the president is speaking to. As Katie Pavlich wrote in June at Townhall, “You just can’t make this stuff up:”

A short week after President Obama blamed high unemployment on ATM’s and airport kiosks, he has launched a $500 million project to “spur high-tech manufacturing.”

On Friday in Pittsburgh, Obama is to call for a joint effort by industry, universities and the federal government to help reposition the United States as a leader in cutting-edge manufacturing, including biotechnology, robotics and nanotechnology _ the development of new materials at the molecular level.

The initiative represents yet another effort by Obama to promote job-creation in the midst of an economic slowdown that has reduced hiring and weakened his job approval standing with the public. The president has tried to elevate his profile on the economy with weekly job-related trips to states that are key to his re-election.

Seriously. First off, people in Pennsylvania are sick of President Obama’s stump speeches as his approval rating sits at 42 percent. Second, President Obama just claimed that technology kills jobs. A week ago Obama he said technology kills jobs, today he will say technology creates jobs. Which one is it Mr. President?

Oh, that 42 percent approval rating that Katie quoted in late June? It’s now even deeper underwater when it comes to the economy. “Gallup: Obama’s job approval on the economy now … 26/71,” Allahpundit writes today. “Almost 50 points underwater on the seminal issue of the age. If that holds and he figures out a way to get reelected anyway, maybe he really is the messiah.”

But I digress.

Of course, one reason why businesses use automation is to reduce the regulatory costs of hiring and firing employees. Regulatory costs dramatically ramped up by our litigious society and by things such as ObamaCare and other federal regulations. Not to mention the uncertainty of hiring new employees when you don’t know what new and punitive regulations will be thrown at your face next.

Which brings us to:

During a town hall meeting at Wyffels Hybrids in Atkinson, Illinois, a farmer expressed concern to President Obama about forthcoming regulations. The man stated that people would rather be farming than “filling out forms and permits to do what we like to do.” President Obama told the farmer “don’t always believe what you hear.”

Who are you going to believe? Me, or all of those lying businessmen — many of whom supported Obama in 2008, presumably reading about him by going somewhere…online.
