During his first address to a joint session of Congress, President Donald Trump honored the sacrifice of fallen Navy SEAL Ryan Owens, and saluted his widow Carryn, who was overcome with emotion.
Owens was killed during a counterterrorism raid in January.
“We are blessed to be joined tonight by Carryn Owens, the widow of a U.S. Navy Special Operator, Senior Chief William ‘Ryan’ Owens. Ryan died as he lived: a warrior, and a hero – battling against terrorism and securing our Nation,” said President Trump. “Ryan’s legacy is etched into eternity.”
As Carryn fought back tears, she received an extended, bipartisan standing ovation from the chamber.
Trump continued, “For as the Bible teaches us, there is no greater act of love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. Ryan laid down his life for his friends, for his country, and for our freedom – we will never forget Ryan.”
This may well have been the most powerful moment during a presidential joint session of Congress in our nation’s history — one that will not soon be forgotten.
