4 Subjects You Won't Hear at the Grammy Awards This Weekend

Remember all the Time’s Up talk at both the SAG Awards and the Golden Globes? The Associated Press says to expect more of the same this weekend at the 60th annual Grammy Awards ceremony.

Grammy Award host James Corden says Sunday’s show will carve out some time to allow artists to express solidarity with the “Me Too” and Time’s Up movements…

In an interview with The Associated Press on Thursday, the late-night talk show host said he didn’t know about the new initiative but supported it.

Musicians will be wearing white roses at the show to support awareness for women suffering from sexual abuse within the industry. It’s virtue signaling, no doubt, but hopefully, there’s real commitment behind the preening.

It’s also easy to predict Corden and co. will take a few swipes at President Donald Trump and other issues near and dear to celebrity hearts. Think racism, sexism and illegal immigration.

What you likely won’t hear, though, are the following four subjects. Each reflects a serious issue happening right now. Yet stars aren’t keen on discussing them all the same.

Maybe a Lorde or Kendrick Lamar will shock the world and name check one of the topics below. It’s doubtful, but only some issues get musicians’ attention these days.

Venezuela

The nation is in free fall. The socialist system is to blame even if news reports downplay the connection. Venezuelan children are dying of starvation. It’s a rolling nightmare, but it’s one that isn’t cool or chic to discuss within celebrity circles. Why? Could their collective soft spot for socialism be to blame?

The Economy

President Trump is softening some, not all, of his critics via the current economic boom. Unemployment is down, hiring is up. The black unemployment rate, in particular, is at an all-time low. The recent tax reform package inspired major companies like Apple, Home Depot, Starbucks and AT&T to either flower employees with bonuses or reinvestment more in the U.S. It’s all great news … and likely to go unmentioned Sunday.

Free Speech on College Campuses

You’d think musicians, whose lifeblood is free speech, would be outraged at how the First Amendment is getting trampled at colleges large and small. Apparently not. It’s hardly a cause celebre in music circles. That likely won’t change following the Grammy’s telecast. What a shame.

A Wayward FBI

Missing texts. New revelations about meetings between the previous Attorney General and the husband of a Democratic power player. Whispers about an “insurance policy” against a “President” Donald Trump. We don’t know all the details yet regarding the FBI and possible criminal behavior. What we know already is chilling, though. Americans deserve to hear the full story, and that starts with releasing the memo some GOP politicians insist are explosive. Could a single singer shout “release the memo?” Unlikely.
