The months following the election of President Trump have revealed the Department of Justice is highly suspect. Activists like Peter Strzok masquerading as law enforcement official, the FBI Director leaking agency materials to the media, the CIA director barking partisan fantasies on cable news and the Department refusing to cooperate with constitutionally-mandated oversight are just some highlights of the Department’s dereliction.
Reports Kimberly Strassel in the Wall Street Journal:
The “bigger picture,” Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) adds, is that in “a lot of the bad and problematic countries” that Intelligence Committee members investigate, “this is what they do there. There is a political party that controls the intelligence agencies, controls the media, all to ensure that party stays in power. If we get to that here, we no longer have a functioning republic. We can’t let that happen.”
No, we can’t let that happen. Why have we allowed this institution and its various branches to become so awful? And why have we allowed this to happen for so long? Why does the FBI Headquarters still bear the name of J. Edgar Hoover, one of the most appalling deep state hater-villains in our history?
So, what to do? No commander-in-chief has had the guts to do what needs to be done: fire everybody. Our country is filled with thoughtful, capable men and women who are willing and able to lead these agencies and not be idiots about it.
How about Bob Barr? As a Congressman from Georgia, Barr courageously lead the House managers during the Clinton impeachment proceedings while facing terrible smears from the Bill and Hillary Clinton cabal. Since leaving the House, Barr has fought on the side of law and order with a mindfulness of civil liberties. It was Barr who fought against the questionable Patriot Act to protect due process.
There are others like Alan Dershowitz who has fought against abuse of power and has defended the rule of law and America’s institutions over and above partisanship. Dershowitz has been alienated and ostracized from his political party, who would gladly trade civil liberties for partisan gain and advantage.
Libertarian Judge Andrew Napolitano or Jeannine Pirro, who was an extraordinary prosecutor in Westchester County, NY would be be a good fit for the DOJ. And there are countless others who were blocked from getting any position in the administration, specifically the Department of Justice, following Trump’s election. These kinds of folks could go in and get the Department back on track. Load the agencies up with good people and the nation will change.
The point is the president could stop this rogue behavior tomorrow and restore dignity to what has become an unbelievably nasty, arrogant and dangerous agency. Sure it comes with risk. But of all people, Donald Trump is the kind of guy who could give up a presidency if need be in pursuit of what is truly right. And would truly be a gift to all Americans – race, creed, etc.
Let’s go, Mr. President.
