Why ‘Catholic’ Georgetown Shouldn't Host an LGBTQ Conference

It is anti-Biblical and anti-Catholic to affirm homosexual acts or transgenderism. Yet “Catholic” Georgetown University is planning to host a summer conference for “LGBTQ Catholics.”

The term “LGBTQ Catholics” is a contradiction in terms, because to be a faithful Catholic one cannot actively live a homosexual or transgender lifestyle. Second of all, it's long past time for the Vatican to tell Georgetown to quit calling itself Catholic.

Speaking of misnomers, "Outreach: An LGBTQ Catholic Ministry" announced:

Outreach 2026 will gather LGBTQ lay people, clergy, scholars, artists, educators, students and family members to celebrate five years of Outreach ministry.

Our three-day conference, which will be held at Georgetown University from June 19 to 21, 2026, will feature keynote presentations, panels, liturgies and opportunities for networking and friendship.

Encouraging clergy to be loud and proud has never caused problems in the Catholic Church…Incidentally, the founder of Outreach and a speaker at the conference is Fr. James Martin, a heretical and scandalous priest who ought to be defrocked.

One of the underlying problems here is a false understanding of mercy and love. In both the Old and New Testaments, God punishes His people who go astray for their own good, because love sometimes requires penance (e.g., 2 Samuel/Kings 12:14, Judges 2:14, Matthew 18:21ff). Furthermore, mercy is a gift — it must be accepted. A person who claims to want Divine love and mercy but continues repeatedly and deliberately to violate God's commands obviously does not want mercy; he wants God to change right and wrong to suit the sinner's emotions and passions. That is why affirming "LGBTQ Catholics," instead of charitably calling them to repentance, is both morally harmful for the erring individuals and insulting to God.

The Catholic Church teaches that homosexual acts are both gravely sinful and a perversion of nature, meriting damnation if not repented of before death. This teaching is firmly founded on the Bible. St. Paul, for instance, states:

Who changed the truth of God into a lie; and worshipped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. For this cause God delivered them up to shameful affections. For their women have changed the natural use into that use which is against nature. And, in like manner, the men also, leaving the natural use of the women, have burned in their lusts one towards another, men with men working that which is filthy, and receiving in themselves the recompense which was due to their error…Who, having known the justice of God, did not understand that they who do such things, are worthy of death; and not only they that do them, but they also that consent to them that do them. —Romans 1:25-27, 32

St. Paul also addresses homosexuality in the First Letter to the Corinthians (6:9-10), where he lists sins that merit eternal exclusion from Heaven: "Do not err: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor liers with mankind, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor railers, nor extortioners, shall possess the kingdom of God." The Greek word translated here as "liers with mankind," ἀρσενοκοῖται, means literally “men engaged in sexual activity with the same sex.”

Homosexuality is addressed in the Old Testament too. Leviticus 18:22 says, “You shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination.” The most famous Bible story about homosexuality is Sodom and Gomorrah, destroyed in Genesis 19 by God for a sin that the narrative makes clear is homosexuality. When angels visit Abraham's nephew Lot to warn him, the locals believe new men have come to town and they demand the guests of Lot that they might "know" them, a common Biblical term for sexual relations (e.g., Genesis 4:1). Lot stunningly offers his daughters instead, but the Sodomites are uninterested in women — they want only men. Sodom and Gomorrah are subsequently destroyed with “brimstone and fire” by the Lord God (Genesis 19:24). The traditional name for homosexuality is “sodomy” because of this passage.

As for transgenderism, that ideology is a more modern phenomenon, so the Bible doesn't address it as directly as homosexuality. But Genesis 1:26-28 does state very clearly and emphatically that God created humans to be either male or female, two sexes as ordained by God and grounded in nature.

And [God] said: Let us make man to our image and likeness...And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them. And God blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and all living creatures that move upon the earth.

Georgetown would do much better to tell "queer Catholics" what Jesus Christ told the people he healed: “Go and sin no more” (John 5:14, 8:11).
