Trump Immigration Crackdown Inspires European Leaders

Multiple European government officials and entities have drawn inspiration from the Trump administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration to bring a little common sense to Europe’s migration crisis.

From the Netherlands to Italy to Greece, some European governments and political parties have finally taken measures this year to check the unending flow of illegal immigration, particularly from Muslim countries, that is transforming Europe for the worse. Sometimes the leaders themselves and sometimes news outlets credit Donald Trump with spurring the reforms.

Geert Wilders, leader of the Dutch Party for Freedom, is the latest European official to find Trump administration policies an excellent model. Responding to a New York Post article on the ICE operation in Minneapolis against Somalian aliens, Wilders enthusiastically posted, “Fantastic! In Europe we should do exactly the same and crack down on African illegals, lock them up and send them home.” Wilders and his party have repeatedly expressed concerns about mass Muslim migration to Europe.

But Wilders is not an isolated example, based on a November piece from the UK Telegraph, citing the Mixed Migration Centre (MMC). “Donald Trump’s strict policies on immigration have emboldened European states to introduce increasingly hardline measures of their own,” the Telegraph claimed.

MMC reported for October the following seemingly Trumpian shifts in European migration policy:

Greece suspends asylum applications from North Africa…The legislation does not appear to include any of the usual exemptions for high-risk groups, such as unaccompanied minors… Austria begins deportations to Syria…Germany steps up deportations to Afghanistan…In July, shortly after a Polish soldier reportedly shot a migrant with a rubber bullet, the Polish government announced that security forces were now authorised to fire live ammunition on migrants “preventatively” or in “self-defence”.

MMC is opposed to all these measures, but the reality is that they are only a small part of what European governments should be enacting. These governments still won’t aggressively address the crisis. But it’s a start.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has been so openly critical of illegal immigration and so friendly to Trump that even before his second term, she drew leftist backlash for supposedly being too much like Trump.

Decode 39 explained in October how Meloni’s immigration policy can be considered similar to Trump’s:

Immigration and security: Meloni is described as the most unmistakable European voice against illegal immigration.

    •    She has curbed flows through agreements with Tunisia and Libya, reducing both arrivals and deaths at sea.

One flaw that Meloni and Trump apparently share is that they still over-import foreign workers from hostile countries to take jobs at cheaper wages. But that issue aside, it is undeniably true that Meloni has openly aligned herself with Donald Trump’s views on immigration.

If only Trump could galvanize a robust campaign against illegal immigration from all the governments of Europe…
