What Have I Been Telling You?

Everyone keeps saying that after Eric Cantor’s loss, immigration reform is dead.

It’s not only not dead, comprehensive immigration reform as Washington constructs it is a zombie. You may think it’s dead. It may look dead. It may even start to rot a little.

But I’ve been saying that it’s not dead yet. Because it’s not dead yet. The US Chamber of Commerce won’t let it die among the GOP elites. The demography-obsessed Democrats won’t let it die. The former want it for the cheap labor. The latter want it for total power. The media wants it because the Democrats want it.

If they all get what they want, the Democrats will use their total power to launch even more regulatory assaults against business that the Chamber won’t like. Either the Chamber doesn’t see that, or they think they’ll be the last little bird that the Democrat alligator will devour. The Chamber should look at the business climate in California and wherever Democrats have total control. And then imagine those policies fully nationalized while business-friendly policies like those in Texas are swept aside. That’s what’s coming if the Democrats get total control, which they believe they will get through the tricks of “comprehensive immigration reform.”

A bad business climate hurts the media’s ability to sell ads and be viable. But there aren’t enough journalists out there who understand that, or care.

“Comprehensive immigration reform” is not dead. Despite his position in the polls, and the American people’s rejection of his policies across the board, despite the dive in his own personal popularity, President Barack Obama still wants to impose as much “reform” as he believes that he can get away with.

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said as much on MSNBC today.

“What the president has said is we want to work with Congress to try to get this done, but at the same time we’re not just going to sit around and wait interminably for Congress [to write laws],” Earnest said. Which is Congress’ job.

By Earnest’s logic, the president can do anything he pleases. That’s tyranny.

“We’ve waited a year already. The president has tasked his secretary of Homeland Security, Jeh Johnson, to try to address some of the problems that have been created by our broken immigration system,” Earnest threatened.

The biggest problem right now is that Obama’s own policies have created a surge of illegal alien children that Border Patrol cannot cope with. His deferral of action against young illegal aliens is attracting more of them to overrun the border. It’s bringing disease into the US. It is straining our resources when we’re already unable to pay our bills. Obama has done next to nothing to stop it.

And he won’t.

Handled correctly, immigration reform could benefit the whole country. It could benefit our security, it could benefit our businesses. But benefiting the whole country is not in Obama’s interests.

This is a president who doesn’t respond to polls, and who doesn’t really care about much other than imposing his hard left ideology. He believes that he stands to benefit from chaos on the border. So he is allowing it continue. And he will lawlessly impose more policies to make it even worse — while blaming Republicans.
