Under questioning from Rep. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) today, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius said that President Obama is keeping his promise that Americans who like their healthcare plans, under Obamacare they can keep them.
Blackburn asked Sebelius directly, “Before, during and after the law was passed the president kept saying if you like your health care plan, you can keep it, so is he keeping his promise?”
“Yes, he is,” Sebelius responded.
Blackburn pressed, “What do you say to 300,000 people in Florida you just mentioned or to the 28,000 in Tennessee that cannot get health insurance? their plans are terminated. Is he keeping his promise to them?”
Sebelius insisted, “First of all, Congresswoman, they can get health insurance. They must be offered new plans, new options, either inside the market marketplace or if they don’t qualify for a financial subsidy they can shop inside or outside of the marketplace.”
Being offered a new plan, at a higher price and including coverage someone may not want or need, because Obamacare forced the cancellation of their existing plan, is not the same thing as keeping coverage that one liked.
CBS reported Tuesday that three times as many Americans are losing their health insurance as have been able to sign up for coverage at Healthcare.gov. According to CBS, at least 2 million are losing their healthcare coverage because of Obamacare’s regulations. NBC reported, and Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) later confirmed, that Democrats knew in 2010 that Obama’s promise was one that would not be kept.
