And she will lose.
Texas state Sen. Wendy Davis and her advisers have begun informing influential Democrats that she intends to run for governor in 2014, according to multiple sources familiar with Davis’s conversations.
The Fort Worth legislator made a national name for herself in June when she mounted a filibuster against new proposed abortion clinic regulations. Texas Republicans ultimately passed those restrictions into law in a special session called by outgoing Republican Gov. Rick Perry.
Flag on the play. The media made Davis’ name for her by promoting her pointless filibuster of a ban on late-term abortions, proving once again that the national media is all in for totally unregulated abortion and whatever the leftwing cause of the day is. The same media trashed Sen. Ted Cruz for rising in opposition to Obamacare, which most Texans and most Americans also oppose.
Shorter me: The national biased media is full of dishonest hacks like Sarah Kliff.
I would love for the national media to start proving me wrong about that. But they prove me right every day.
Davis is one of the most leftwing members of the Texas legislature. She is out of step with Texans on a number of issues, including late-term abortion and Second Amendment rights. Her likely Republican opponent, Attorney General Greg Abbott, is well within the Texas voters’ wheelhouse on both of those issues and many others. He also already has a massive campaign war chest.
Having said all that, Democrats recognize that they will have the media behind Davis like no other previous candidate since the state last elected a Democrat governor in 1990. Davis will haul in major out-of-state money and Battleground Texas can be expected to make as much out of the contest as possible. Hollywood will turn out strong for her. While Davis loses the top job and probably her state Senate seat as well, her run may well energize some voters who just can’t get enough of the failed leftwing blue state model of government and countenance absolutely no restrictions on abortion whatsoever.
The Texas Democrat Party of “white primary” infamy has no real base in this state, and relies on ambulance chaser money, Beltway agitators and the DNC to survive. The real game here is to make Democrats more competitive in Texas, and Davis could move that effort ahead a few yards in a way that, say, the boring liberal trial lawyer Bill White could not.
