Campaigning in Wisconsin today, Mitt Romney called the leaks “very serious,” and questioned whether the administration can fairly investigate them.
JANESVILLE, Wis. — Mitt Romney has joined a list of mostly-Republican lawmakers calling for a special prosecutor to investigate leaks about sensitive counter-terrorism programs, telling FOX News Channel on Monday that he believes the allegations are “very serious.”
“I do believe they’re very serious, I do believe a special prosecutor should be looking into them,” Romney said of the leaked information, which was revealed in news stories about a cyber-warfare campaign against Iran, as well as a “kill list” of terror targets.
“Those items should not be leaked in such a way that puts America’s interests and our people in jeopardy,” Romney said.
On Sunday, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, joined Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) in calling for an independent prosecutor to handle the probe rather than the two US attorneys assigned by Attorney General Eric Holder.
President Barack Obama has said the suggestion that his White House would purposely leak classified information is “offensive.”
Romney also said that he will win Wisconsin in the fall, something no Republican presidential candidate has done since Ronald Reagan’s 1984 49-state dispatch of Walter Mondale. But after Gov. Scott Walker beat back Big Labor’s effort to recall him on June 5th, Wisconsin has come into play in the presidential election.
