The Best Congressional Tweet of 2014

Rarely can a partisan make a statement that unites Americans so much, regardless of party or ideology, but Rep. John Dingell (D-Mich.) did just that during his last year in the House:

The context? A tweet mistakenly sent out on the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Water official account promoted a Kardashian app: “I’m now a C-list celebrity in Kim Kardashian: Hollywood. Come join me and become famous too by playing on iPhone!”

“I’m the last original author of the Clean Water Act, but I have no idea who/what a Kardashian is and I rarely play games. You OK, @EPAwater?” Dingell first tweeted in response.

“Whoops…our bad. Sorry about tweet. Upside – more attention for the Office of Water ( ), thanks @KimKardashian,” the EPA followed up after deleting the tweet, which it blamed on a fellow.

Last month, the House said goodbye to the last World War II veterans serving in Congress: Dingell, the retiring longest serving member of Congress in history, and Rep. Ralph Hall (R-Texas), who was defeated in his primary.

Dingell, 88, and Hall, 91, served a combined 46 terms, or 92 years, in the House. Dingell’s wife, Debbie Dingell, 61, won his House seat. Today, Dingell made it official by adding “former” to his longtime title.
