Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Rep. Ron Barber (D-Ariz.) will be hosting former Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly, as their guests at the State of the Union tonight.
Barber, a former district director for Giffords, was also wounded in the 2011 Tuscon shooting. He won his former boss’ seat after she resigned to focus on her recovery.
“Very pleased that @GabbyGiffords and Mark Kelly will be present at the SOTU this week!” McCain tweeted Sunday. Giffords sent out a tweet thanking her host.
“One year ago, I was proud to walk onto the House floor for the State of the Union Address. The next day, after casting my last vote, I resigned my seat in Congress,” Giffords said in a statement.
“Mark and I will be there again tomorrow night, because this is a critical moment in time for legislation to reduce gun violence in the United States,” she added.
The gun control PAC founded by Giffords and Kelly after her shooting, Americans for Responsible Solutions, released its first ad featuring the pair yesterday:
