Al-Zawahiri: 'Battle' for Sharia in Egypt 'Has Just Begun'

Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, an Egyptian doctor, has declared that the battle for Sharia has begun in his home country.

In a video just released by As-Sahab on YouTube, al-Zawahiri asks Salafist Hazem Salah Abu Isamail, who challenged Mohammed Morsi for the presidency in the first elections after the fall of Hosni Mubarak, to finish what he started and “ensure our nation’s return to its proper role as a leader in the Arab and Muslim world.”

Abu Ismail ran on the platform of ending the peace treaty with Israel, forcing women to veil and be segregated from men, and lowering the marriage age to puberty.

Al-Zawahiri said that “the battle is not over but has just begun” and that it is up to “Sheikh Hazem, his supporters and all those loyal in Egypt, to launch a popular campaign in order to complete the revolution that was aborted, and cheated out of its accomplishments.”

Forces loyal to Morsi have beating and shooting at opposition demonstrators, who are demanding a secular democracy and oppose the draft constitution penned by Islamists. Four separate opposition protest marches will converge on the presidential palace today, BBC reported.

Al-Zawahiri said the revolution belonged not to the thousands who filled Tahrir Square demanding an end to tyranny, but “to all those who want to cleanse Egypt of social immortality and corruption.”
