Is American Urban Culture Beyond Repair? Open Season on the White Devil Part II

Examining the deleterious impacts of modern urban culture on the American social fabric and its future prognosis.

‘How it be walking past white people’

The ostensible point of this video is to illustrate how weird— weird enough, in fact, to farm content out of it — and totally alien to their own cultural norms, black people find it when white people flash a friendly smile at strangers in public.

To be fair, the bemused reaction is understandable in that this behavior is not found in American urban culture, in which any kind of polite manners is essentially an indication of weakness and therefore an invitation to be taken advantage of, as if we are in some kind of Hobbesian state of nature of war of all against all.

Such was, for sure, my experience in public school in Atlanta; one, especially as a white (or an East Asian, for that matter), had to be constantly vigilant, as the urbanites were constantly looking for any excuse, no matter how specious, to get violent.

Even making eye contact was taken as some kind of affront.

Once, at Henderson Middle School in Atlanta, and this is a true story — which I may have relayed here before or else somewhere else — a friend of mine accidentally stepped on an urban youth’s sneaker in the hallway. The youth then followed my friend for the equivalent of two blocks through the school, all the way to his class, stepping on his shoe repeatedly and challenging him to “do something” about it.

In short, life in public school in Atlanta was basically one tier below prison, where racial animus ruled the day, and violence was always a split-second away.

White to the back of the bus for Black History Month

MLK had a dream.

Is it dead?

Here’s an urban gentleman with his pants practically around his ankles, in keeping with classic urban fashion aesthetic, farming TikTok content out of harassing white people on the bus and telling them to move to the back in honor of Black History Month.

Probably because he’s been well-trained to submit, or else he’s just not in the mood to get in a fight on public transportation for no reason, the white man dutifully complies and, for good measure, shamefully pledges his undying affection for Rosa Parks and his deep appreciation for urban culture.

Even the white babies aren’t exempt

Here we’ve got a woman of the urban persuasion somewhere in Jolly Old England threatening to throw coffee on and beat a native British woman with her toddler in a stroller, apparently for recording her very uncouth, un-British behavior on the street (the exact context of the confrontation isn’t clear as the footage begins mid-showdown).

In the same vein, here’s a similar event from across the pond in America, in which an urban woman, for no apparent reason, casually spits on a white woman and her baby walking down the street in a stroller.

An interracial love story

Next, here is a youth scholar and future astronaut beating a white girl on the street, ostensibly for refusing his romantic overtures.

According to the narration on the clip from local news media, he was following/stalking her and, when she refused to engage with him, decided he’d avenge his honor by punching her repeatedly in the face.

As the caveat always goes, these are not isolated events; the videos depicting them are everywhere, and the FBI Uniform Crime Report statistics back up their ubiquity.

And the racial dynamics only ever really go one way.

Try to find video after video after video of white people spitting on black mothers with babies or whites telling blacks to get to the back of the bus.

You won’t because they don’t exist.
