Not the Saudi, Iranian or Afghan regime. The American regime. Dinesh D’Souza has pleaded guilty to campaign finance law violations.

Dinesh D’Souza, the outspoken conservative scholar and filmmaker, has pleaded guilty to a federal charge that he paid others to contribute to a friend’s campaign for New York U.S. Senate seat in New York in 2012. Sentencing has been set for September 23. D’Souza may be sentenced only to probation, but a jail sentence is possible.

The plea cuts short a process that was scheduled to go to trial today. Last week, D’Souza lost a motion to dismiss the charges against him on the grounds he had been selectively prosecuted.

The law barring individuals from contributing more than $5,000 to federal candidates is enforced sparingly, but apparently the evidence that D’Souza reimbursed others for donating money to Wendy Long, a New York lawyer who challenged Democratic senator Kirsten Gillibrand, was extensive.

D’Souza’s proximate crime was violating America’s increasingly complicated, built-to-employ-lawyers campaign finance law. He violated the law and gave the government the weapon to wreck him. His actual crimes were making a movie criticizing Barack Obama, 2016: Obama’s America, and criticizing Islam.

The Obama government previously jailed Coptic Christian film-maker Nakoula Nakoula for a year on parole violations. Coptic Christians are routinely persecuted in Egypt, to the point that they are among the world’s most vulnerable religious minorities. Nakoula came to the federal government’s attention when President Obama, then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, US Ambassador to the UN Susan Rice and others blamed his obscure YouTube movie for causing a riot that led to the deaths of four Americans in Benghazi, Libya. There was no riot. Nakoula’s movie played no role in the pre-planned attack. But he still spent a year in jail.

Exit question: Does D’Souza get to experience the regime’s loving embrace just like Nakoula did?

It's not the "American regime", it's the Obama regime, as in Stalin's regime, or Mussolini's regime. the term "regime", in this case, denotes an illegitimate government that does NOT have the consent of the governed.

And it's setting a dangerous precedent for itself; the Left won't always be in power in this country, and payback is a b*tch.

If you make yourself visible, you must not make yourself a target by committing a crime. I grant that this crime is perhaps more malum prohibidum than malum pro se.
Putting the shoe on the other foot: suppose that we could tag Michael Moore with similar charges. Most of us would want him prosecuted.

That's why I never even entertain the idea of running for office, but will always support good candidates. Being a small business owner, I've paid lots of taxes late along with the accompanying penalties because our cash flow was screwy. I'm fairly sure that one of the ladies that babysat for us when the children were younger may not have been a legal immigrant. I'm fairly sure I've got other sins out there that would be "political fodder" if I were too vocal about my conservative positions.

The left is working pretty hard at making sure that it will always be in power.

I agree. Campaign finance is so convoluted, I'm sure there are many ways you can inadvertently run afoul of the law. If that were the case with D’Souza I assume we would have heard about it by now.

So assuming this was a flagrant violation, and disregarding any debate about the validity of law, I'm afraid this is a case of corruption among the "good guys". Very sad.

Well, Shrillary Killary DID sign that UN treaty that outlaws criticism of Islam.

When, exactly, does that take effect? I've heard sometime in June?

The Secretary or president can sign any treaty. It only comes into effect when the Senate ratifies it and the Senate hasn't ratified any treaty like you describe.
