FBI Blasts Media for Erroneous Boston Arrest Reports
April 17, 2013 - 12:07 pm
This afternoon the FBI issued a statement following numerous reports in the media that a suspect had been arrested in connection with the Boston bombing. No arrest has been made, though the investigators are working off of video and images taken around the time of the bombing.
The FBI cautions all media to essentially keep calm and carry on, rather than run with everything they hear.
Contrary to widespread reporting, no arrest has been made in connection with the Boston Marathon attack. Over the past day and a half, there have been a number of press reports based on information from unofficial sources that has been inaccurate. Since these stories often have unintended consequences, we ask the media, particularly at this early stage of the investigation, to exercise caution and attempt to verify information through appropriate official channels before reporting.
CNN and later Fox had reported that an arrest had been made. The AP followed suit, and things got most out of hand when the Boston Globe reported that not only was a suspect in hand, that person was en route to court.
