The Obama Administration Declares War

February 28th, 2014 - 5:04 pm

Against Vladimir Putin? Don’t be silly. But the Obama administration is fully prepared to wage maximum war against the enemy within, as Peggy Noonan writes in her latest column:

We are suffering in great part from the politicization of everything and the spread of government not in a useful way but a destructive one. Everyone wants to help the poor, the old and the sick; the safety net exists because we want it. But voters and taxpayers feel bullied, burdened and jerked around, which again is not new but feels more intense every day. Common sense and native wit tell them America is losing the most vital part of itself in the continuing shift of power from private to public. Rules, regulations, many of them stupid, from all the agencies—local, state, federal—on the building of a house, or the starting of a business. You can only employ so many before the new insurance rules kick in so don’t employ too many, don’t take a chance! Which means: Don’t grow. It takes the utmost commitment to start a school or improve an existing one because you’ll come up against the unions, which own the politicians.

It’s all part of the malaise, the sclerosis. So is the eroding end of the idea that religious scruples and beliefs have a high place that must culturally and politically be respected. The political-media complex is bravely coming down on florists with unfashionable views. On Twitter Thursday the freedom-fighter who tweets as @FriedrichHayek asked: “Can the government compel a Jewish baker to deliver a wedding cake on a Saturday? If not why not.” Why not indeed. Because the truly tolerant give each other a little space? On an optimistic note, the Little Sisters of the Poor haven’t been put out of business and patiently await their day in court.

I think a lot of people right now, certainly Republicans and conservatives, feel like a guy in a batting cage taking ball after ball from an automatic pitching machine. He’s hitting the ball and keeping up and suddenly the machine starts going berserk. It’s firing five balls a second, then 10. At first he tries to hit a few. Then he’s just trying to duck, trying not to get hurt.

That’s how people feel about the demands and dictates. The balls keep coming at them politically, locally, culturally. Republicans and conservatives comprise at least half the country. That’s a lot of people.

But they’re the wrong kind of people from the left’s perspective — and as Bertolt Brecht suggested 60 years ago, “would it not be simpler if the government simply dissolved the people and elected another?”

Sorry Peggy, I'm still waiting for your column apologizing for supporting Dear Liar and dismissing Sarah Palin. Admit you were wrong and I'll forgive you. Until such time, get lost.

China flexing muscles in the sea and our once glorious history in the Philippines is lost in the mist of large battleships.

Iran getting the most curious secret deal from China, Russia and Obama, and our once glorious history with the birth of Israel is lost in the sands of time and nuclear bomb making.

Venezuela, Egypt, Libya, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, half of Africa...erupt in a crumbling, rumbling volcanic ash heap.

The PIIGS of Europe are broken, frail and near collapse.

What a splendid time to abandon God entirely. For radical Islamists take His name in vain and radical leftists take it in scorn.

A suicide needs no God. A planetary suicide is no exception. It's all for a good cause. Keeping up with the Jonestowns.

Neville Chamberlain, Poland, phoney justifications for raids on soveriegn states, a dithering democratic western Europe; dejavue all over again, what could go wrong? Our Neville (President Obama) is more concerned about gay rights than international provacation to war. Stand by for more, as the mega metrosexual is a weak match for the Russian bear.

Obama's snark reminds me of newsreel footage of Huey Long taunting his detractors. Long did not end well.

We've been (not) dealing with an uncontested arrival from our Southern border for decades now.

Pray! But work for a Conservative victory this November! Conservatives need to do registration drives! Use the Marxist Democrat Party's tactics! Fight fire with Fire! We have to impeach this racist mulatto. He is fomenting a race war in USA to destroy us from within and allow a Marxist takeover!

Note Russia's other moves. They are seeking basing for offensive capability worldwide. I do not think they are setting up an Armed Peace Corps like USA has.

Do we have time to regain the integrity of the vote? I believe the Obama "victory" in 2012 was won through electoral FRAUD!

This is Marzouq the Redneck Muslim! I am a lover of love, hater of hate and seeker of truth! I fly like a cruise missile through the gaps, under the radar to deliver my payload of love and deeper understanding.

Salaam eleikum Y'all! Payload delivered. Marzouq out.

In Dear Leader's defense, he didn't originate the cop-out of we'll only fight to protect our interests if someone else does first. That doctrine was first formally adopted as a go/no-go switch in August, 1914. A large number of Britons were perfectly willing to watch France get swamped and Imperial Germany entrench itself in the Low Countries . . . so long as Belgium didn't fight back. Niall Ferguson notwithstanding, fortunately Belgium fought back. Of the later examples cited, the Anschluß in March, 1938 (the anniversary of which we're approaching, come to think of it) is the most perfect analogy to what's going on with the Crimea now. That also was the product of back-room threats and military preparations. What unifies 1914 and 1938 with today is the assumption by the elites that we have no dog in the Crimean hunt. It's as if Our Betters don't think everyone in Eastern Europe and Central Asia is watching what Dear Leader does, and won't adjust their actions and relationships with Putin's Russia accordingly.

I'll go ahead and toss out one additional imperfect historical analogy: In 1914, there was a decaying, multi-national imperial power whose vitality was a distant memory. Amid crashing waves of new sources of political power and societal forms, it struggled for relevance. Everyone with a lick of sense within it knew things could not go on forever as they had; yet at the top a single will decreed -- and was seconded by the power elite -- that Nothing Change. And so when some teen-aged punk capped Franz Ferdinand in June, 1914 (centenary coming up, folks; how's that for curiosity?) Conrad von Hötzendorf and those who thought like him figured it would be the fastest way to re-seize the initiative and demonstrate Habsburg's continuing relevance as a Great Power to crush the Serbian vipers' nest. The point's already been made elsewhere that Putin's trying to re-litigate the Cold War's outcome, and to keep bankrupt, hollowed-out, demographically imploding Russia relevant as a Great Power. Good thing we've got Smart Diplomacy™ on our side, as the Blogfather has observed.

With further military action expressly - unanimously! - approved by the Russian parliament, is "uncontested arrival" still the operative phrase?

In other words, to save face over the fact that there’s nothing much we can do to stop this, the official U.S. line is that this can’t be an invasion if the Russians are being … greeted as liberators.

As a curious twist of fate, many Ukrainians welcomed the arrival of Hitler's forces in 1941 as a liberation from the tender mercies of Stalin. Of course they were very soon disabused of the notion that Hitler meant them well....
