Breaking from their elders in the state, Minnesota students prefer Donald Trump to Hillary Clinton by a slim margin. From the Minneapolis Star Tribune:
Trump clinched a narrow win over Hillary Clinton in the first round of results in the inaugural statewide mock election for high school students, run by Secretary of State Steve Simon’s office.
About 77,000 students from 213 high schools filled out ballots for U.S. President.
Trump won by about 2 percent points, with nearly 35 percent of the vote, compared to Clinton’s nearly 33 percent.
It should be noted that final results have not been tabulated. Additional schools will be holding mock elections, and those vote totals will affect the statewide results. The article does not specify the geography of these yet-to-vote schools, which would go a long way toward predicting how they will lean.
Even with the results remaining preliminary, it proves nonetheless provocative that students in a definitively blue state skew ever so slightly toward Trump.
Then again, it shouldn’t be all that surprising given the fact that these kids have grown up in a Democratic administration. In the context they find themselves in, youthful rebellion expresses itself best as a vote for the Republican.
