Super lame, guys. When I think of causes that require intervention from the Justice League, I think of otherworldly foes like Doomsday, Steppenwolf, or Brainiac. It turns out that the real-life cast of the upcoming Warner Bros. adaptation perceive a different sort of threat—the Dakota Access Pipeline. From Collider:
In a new video posted online by Change.org, Ben Affleck (Batman), Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman), Ray Fisher (Cyborg), Jason Momoa (Aquaman), and Ezra Miller (The Flash) have banded together to film a new PSA video in solidarity with the protestors.
Protestors, especially those from Native American tribes, fear the new pipeline, which will travel across four states, will disturb sacred land and taint their drinking water supplies. Hundreds of Native Americans from across the country gathered in North Dakota, marking the largest Native American protest in more than 100 years. The act recently turned violent as security officers threatened to sic dogs on the protestors.
In spite of the fact that Collider chooses to emphasize the use of canines by private security, the protest truly “turned violent” when encroaching trespassers began to destroy property. From NPR:
In a statement, the Morton County Sheriff’s Department said protesters marched from their encampment onto private lands, where the pipeline is being constructed.
“Once protestors arrived at the construction area, they broke down a wire fence by stepping and jumping on it,” the sheriff’s office said. “According to numerous witnesses within five minutes the crowd of protestors, estimated to be a few hundred people became violent. They stampeded into the construction area with horses, dogs and vehicles.”
Morton County Sheriff Kyle Kirchmeier said it “was more like a riot than a protest.”
I guess the site’s security was supposed to stand down and let vandalizing trespassers traipse where they will? It’s odd that the ‘Justice League’ cast would side with the protesters on this one, seeing as how their cinematic alter egos typically act to protect the innocent from criminals rather than endorse the criminal cause.
