It’s an axiom which has endured in Hollywood. Movies based on video games suck. From Super Mario Bros. to Hitman, films adapted from video games have failed to perform at the box office or gain much respect from critics.
This year will see two high-budget efforts to break that curse. Warcraft will deliver fantasy based on the most popular online game of all time. But the best hope for truly legitimizing video game films lies with Assassin’s Creed.
The latter film has a lot going for it. First, the source material proves inherently cinematic. Assassin’s Creed is high-concept science fiction and epic period piece rolled into one. Second, the cast is top notch. Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard, celebrated actors who previously teamed up in a critically-acclaimed production of Macbeth, star here. Justin Kurzel, their director from that collaboration, helms Assassin’s Creed as well.
The first trailer for the film was aired on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday night. The best word to describe it is: legit.
