In honor of Billy Joel’s Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, I thought we’d listen to one of his lesser known cuts. “I Don’t Want To Be Alone” is pretty typical Joel in that it’s a perfectly written and crafted little pop song about a messed up couple giving it another shot. But then it has this semi-reggae island beat to it, adding a touch of ska to his one and only New Wave album, Glass Houses.

This cut never got a single release or an official video. I don’t think it was ever even a B-side. I’ve never been able to find a concert version either, other than an unlistenable bootleg I found on YouTube just now, which I won’t bother you with. But it’s always been a favorite of mine, so enjoy the album version I fell in love with 35 summers ago.
