This, of course, is a stupid idea:
American counterterrorism officials, citing what they call “alarming” intelligence about a possible Qaeda strike inside the United States this fall, are reviewing a proposal that could allow for the postponement of the November presidential election in the event of such an attack, NEWSWEEK has learned.
Unless. . .
Think of Ridge’s announcement not as a policy statement, nor even as a trial balloon. Instead, think of it as disinformation. To al Qaeda, the statement reads, “Want to try to influence our election? Maybe all you’ll accomplish is to keep George W. Bush in charge longer.”
As disinformation, it might work, might not. But it’s still a stupid idea.
