I first discovered how beautiful Portuguese is as a kid, when I heard a Juan Carlos Jobim/Frank Sinatra Portugese/English duet of “The Girl From Ipanema.” Don’t laugh — the song has become overplayed kitsch, sure, but that version was and is lovely.
I’m also a fan of Dorothy Parker, because she was a viciously talented writer of great impact — and was pretty and could drink me under the table.
