Seattle’s new mayor has doubled down on the utter spectacle that the hot‑and‑cold‑running drug addicts display in the downtown area, but now the dogs are getting involved — and not for a good reason.
I’ve always wondered about the wisdom of “homeless” people—who ostensibly can’t afford a place to lay their heads—dragging a dog they can’t afford to feed and care for along on their zombie drug forays. After talking to women who sleep on the streets, I can understand why they would want a dog to fend off sexual predators, but now their furry security systems are at risk as well.
And that’s because dogs are dying of fentanyl overdoses. And not just homeless dogs, either. Dogs taken out on a leash by their owners on a Saturday morning to scratch and sniff and check their peemail while strolling through the downtown area, the International District, and Belltown — where the druggies congregate — are also at risk.
Dogs are finding, sniffing, and ingesting the drug residue on the drug setups—needles, glass pipes, and discarded foils—that the government hands out as part of its laughable “harm reduction.” This drug paraphernalia carries poisonous residue that has killed dogs.
So, at the height of absurdity, the King County Public Health Department is now coaching dog owners on how to give their dogs CPR and how to shoot them up with Narcan.
Recently, a litter of six puppies had to be revived with O2, Narcan, and CPR by first responders due to drug poisoning.

Allowing drug abusers to sleep on the streets puts not only them at risk, but their dogs as well.
Instead of wanting these drug-addled zombies to get off the sauce and into rehab, Mayor Katie Wilson, along with the city attorney, has pushed for the decriminalization of open-air drug use, according to the local police union. They’re fans of so-called “harm reduction” and “housing first” programs that give the drugged-out zombies a place to crash and OD while using. And now, the addicts are killing their dogs.
My friend Kevin Dahlgren, an expert on homeless issues, found these dogs recently tied to a drug addict who was completely knocked out. He's seen it all and is as empathetic a human as you can find. However, he doesn't want these addicts to have dogs.
I found a dog tethered to two fentanyl addicts nodded out. The little guy clearly wanted to go home with me. I do not believe a fentanyl addict deserves the right to own a pet. Agreed.
Seattle helped create this problem, and the city and county’s response is to give drug addicts tips on how they can save their dogs when they can’t save themselves.
Who’s more helpless: people addicted to drugs or their dogs?
