Ted Cruz on March for Life: 'We March in Prayerful Protest of Horrific Injustice'

On Friday morning, a few hours before the March for Life in Washington, D.C., Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) delivered a strong video message explaining why Americans protest the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision every year. He delivered this message with his majestic beard, looking like a nineteenth century American president.

“Why do we march? We march for the unborn of our generation and generations to come,” Cruz declared. “We march in prayerful protest of the horrific injustice against the unborn and their mothers. We march in celebration of life.”

He noted that in the March for Life, “millions of Americans are mourning the 46th anniversary of Roe vs. Wade, but also celebrating the incredible progress we have made since then fighting to restore the God-given rights of every American of every age.”

The “horrific injustice” he mentioned involves the over 60 million lives “violently lost to abortion.” Abortion activists dehumanize these babies, using unfamiliar terms like “fetus” to suggest they are clumps of cells rather than biologically unique human beings with individual DNA. Cruz shot back against this, mourning the “generations of sons and daughters lost.”

Yet women also suffer in abortion. Some studies have shown that induced abortion may increase the risk of breast cancer in some women. Women also suffer psychologically from abortion. “For far too long abortion has not only denied the most basic rights for those in the womb, but it’s also left the mother suffering, often with tremendous guilt and pain,” Cruz declared.

The senator thanked every American who will join the pro-life protest. “To all those women and men marching at home and in our nation’s capital, thank you,” Cruz said. “Thank you for being true champions of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I’m proud to stand with you and I’m committed to working side-by-side with you to restoring a culture of life in America where every human life is respected and protected as a precious gift from God.”

While most Americans identify as “pro-choice” rather than “pro-life,” vast majorities support key restrictions on abortion that run contrary to the goals of Planned Parenthood and the Democratic Party. In fact, if the Supreme Court were to reconsider Roe v. Wade, most Americans would want the states to be able to make their own laws on abortion — a right those states lost in the 1973 decision.

Most Americans also say that scientifically a fetus is a unique life, rather than a part of a woman’s body. Fifty-two percent say the life begins either at conception (42 percent) or in the first three months of pregnancy (10 percent).

Ted Cruz will speak at the march this afternoon, along with pro-life leaders across the country. When he speaks and millions march, they will be fighting for protections that most Americans actually agree with, even if they think of themselves as “pro-choice.”

Hundreds of signs at the March for Life will declare “We Are the Pro-Life Generation,” and those signs may be more true than even the marchers realize.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article claimed that abortion increases a woman’s risk for breast cancer. It has been updated to reflect that the study cited claims that induced abortion may increase the risk of breast cancer in some women.
