WASHINGTON, D.C. — Sunday afternoon, while walking among Antifa and Black Lives Matter, I ran into Suzanne Monk from Capital Heights, Md. She wore a helmet with “Trump-Pence” and “Make America Great Again” stickers, and she held a sign reading “No Kessler! No Antifa! No political violence!”
A crowd quickly formed around her, chanting, “No free speech for racists!” They chanted this, asking why she supported President Donald Trump and declaring him a racist. They mobbed around her, getting louder and louder.
Monk had turned out to oppose “Unite the Right,” the white nationalist protest in Washington, D.C., which was scheduled for the one-year anniversary of the white nationalist riots in Charlottesville, Va. She was a lone Trump supporter among the crowds of liberals who wore “I’m with her” t-shirts and “Impeach Trump and Pence” yellow stickers on their clothes.
These hordes also held signs declaring “Love Trumps Hate,” and “No Nazis, No KKK, No Fascist USA!” Monk firmly opposed the neo-Nazis, the Ku Klux Klan, and Unite the Right. But she still supported Trump.
For this crime, Monk had a mob form around her, chanting “No free speech for racists!” They yelled at her, drowning out her voice. They ripped her sign from her. In an oddly humiliating move, they threw a glitter-bomb at her (and got some glitter on me as well).
Like the pro-life activists at the Women’s March last year, this pro-Trump woman could not escape mobs, violence, and demands for her free speech to be removed. At the Women’s March, a pro-life woman was told, “I hope you get raped.” She was unable to march with women without being branded a traitor to her sex.
Similarly, Suzanne Monk was unable to oppose Jason Kessler and the alt-right without being branded a racist. Her story is important, because the vast majority of conservatives and Republicans do not harbor white nationalist sentiments, and most would condemn “Unite the Right,” just like Monk did.
The liberal counter-protesters could brook no dissent from their anti-Trump ranks, however. Their protest wasn’t about Jason Kessler so much as it was about tying the neo-Nazis and white nationalists to the man in the White House — and this incident made that breathtakingly clear.
