On Tuesday night, CNN’s Anderson Cooper told Stephen Colbert he walked out of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” (2017) about 45 minutes into the movie. He didn’t leave out of protest, however. If anything, his departure should be seen as a compliment to the film, he said.
“I know, I know, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. I had a lot of work to do,” Cooper said, as a confused Colbert struggled to understand. “No, it wasn’t a protest. I’m going to see it again, I just had too much in my head, I wanted to enjoy it.”
“So wait a second, so you went and paid money,” Colbert said, teasing out the situation in his head. “You paid money, you walked in, and it occured to you in the middle of the movie, I don’t have time for this.”
Cooper confirmed the ridiculous suggestion. “Yeah, about 45 minutes in, yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. It’s like, I’m not giving this the attention it deserves,” he admitted.
“Which is really a compliment,” Colbert suggested.
Cooper agreed, “Yeah, I was like this deserves my attention, I’m not giving it my attention.”
Then the late-night host shot down the CNN anchor brilliantly. “It’s like if you’re making love to someone, in the middle of it, you’re like, you know what, I’m not giving this my all,” Colbert said, to uproarious applause.
Was Anderson Cooper’s walk-out a compliment — the movie is worth his time, so he should come back when he’s in a better mood to enjoy it — or an insult — the movie isn’t quite good enough to get him into the proper frame of mind? Colbert’s quip hilariously suggested the latter, and some might be inclined to agree.
It’s quite possible Anderson Cooper’s backhanded compliment is, as President Trump would say, “fake news.”
