WATCH: Why Christians Shouldn't be Scared into Voting Trump

If you’re only voting for Donald Trump because you’re afraid of Hillary Clinton, this message is for you.

recent viral Facebook video (with 463,000 views) from the organization Faith Trumps Fear helps explain why many Christians aren’t scared into voting for Trump. The video shows a young Asian American wrestling with the oft-repeated call for Christians to fall in line with the GOP.

The narrator recalls being told to “hold his nose,” to which he asks pointedly, “but should I set aside my conscience, and cast my vote based out of a fear of Hillary, rather than my obedience to God?”

He goes on, “Should I turn a blind eye to Trump’s incredibly public promotion of fornication, adultery [his sexual bragging], hateful rhetoric, sodomy [praise for the LGBT community], abortion [praise for Planned Parenthood], and mockery of God? A man who says he has never needed to ask God’s forgiveness for anything?”

“I believe in a God who is almighty,” the narrator continues. “A God who, very likely, will allow Trump or Hillary to become the next president. Yet even then, He will still remain in control. No matter who sits in the White House, no matter who rules in the court house, a higher king should rule in our hearts.”

This should be an uncontroversial claim, but given the hyperbole of partisans on both sides, the ultimate sovereignty of God seems in doubt. Republicans are so terrified of Hillary Clinton (who indeed presents an insidious threat to traditional Christianity), and Democrats are so afraid of Donald Trump that they seem no longer to trust in the sovereignty of God.

But no matter how tense this election becomes, American Christians should not lose sight of God’s ultimate kingship.

“We are not called to choose the lesser of two evils, we are called to holiness,” the narrator declares. “God, and God alone, will save our country.”

This is not to say that a vote for Trump is inherently sinful or that there is no reason why a conservative Christian could support him. But those Christians who consider Trump a morally heinous individual and who do not trust him to stand up for conservative values should not be pressured into voting for him just to stop Hillary Clinton. If you think Trump would only be marginally better, you need not waste your vote on him. Don’t be scared into voting for the lesser of two evils. No matter who wins, God is in control.

As Christians, we are called to place our faith and hope in God, not in government. Jesus famously said, “My kingdom is not of this world,” and He promised his followers persecution, not power. As Psalm 146 puts it: “Put not your trust in princes…in whom there is no help. Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is in the Lord his God.”

In the viral video, the narrator still encourages his audience to vote, and for ballot-qualified candidates. He encourages Christians to send a message to Washington that they “will not accept the unacceptable.” If you do consider Trump unworthy of your vote and trust God that no matter what happens in November, He will still be sovereign, you should vote for Libertarian Gary Johnson or independent Evan McMullin.

Both of these men have the benefit of not being connected to any sexual scandals, and of not claiming to be Christian and then saying they’ve never asked God for forgiveness. Yes, that’s a low bar, but this is 2016, and there are more options than Clinton and Trump.
