Racism is a nasty, vile thing. Anyone who thinks that one race is superior or should get preferential treatment over another is a vile, disgusting human being.
But some people think President Donald Trump is supposed to make racism disappear through the power of unicorn farts and fairy urine.
Politico reports, “Democratic lawmakers insisted Sunday that President Donald Trump must do more to prevent blatant acts of racism, as white supremacists prepared to gather in Washington, D.C., to mark the one-year anniversary of last year’s violent rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.”
In particular, Rep. Elijah Cummings told ABC News, “He has not gone far enough.” He added, “I think it’s a low bar for the president of the United States to simply say he’s against racism. He’s got to do better than that.”
The problem is, just what is Trump supposed to do?
You see, as disgusting as being racist may be, it’s not illegal. Racists have the same rights as anyone else. If Black Lives Matter has a right to hold a rally–and they do–then so do neo-Nazi groups. That’s how rights work.
So what was the problem? Basically, Trump isn’t complying with leftist demands.
“It’s one thing to say things. It’s another thing when we look at the direction that you’re going and see that the very things that you say that you stand for, you undermine through your actions. For example, I believe that he is about the business of suppressing the vote,” Cummings argued.
In other words, when you want people to have to present ID to vote, that’s voter suppression. Nevermind that minorities who are citizens of this country have no problem getting ID. After all, they need government-issued identification to cash checks, buy alcohol and tobacco if they might not be of age, and a whole host of other things. Why would they not have an ID card they could use to vote?
Oh, right. If they had that, illegals couldn’t vote as easily. Is that the vote you’re worried about Trump suppressing, Rep. Cummings?
Look, Trump says a lot of things I wish he wouldn’t. However, the American president has little power to actually stop racism.
What Cummings and his fellow Democrats really want, most likely, is for it to be illegal for racists to hold rallies or other such things in clear violation of their First Amendment rights. Either that or Trump should allow illegal immigrants to vote as a way of showing he’s not racist.
Only an idiot would see why both of those are non-starters.
