These days, it feels like the Left is parodying itself.
For example, following the GOP tax bill’s passage, we heard over and over that people were going to die because of the bill. It was such a joke that many quipped that the death of net neutrality would kill people as well.
Now, with a government shutdown looming, we have another example of this “people are going to die” nonsense. This time, it comes from Senator Dianne Feinstein.
“Shutting down the government is a very serious thing. People die, accidents happen. You don’t know. Necessary functions can cease,” Feinstein said, echoing previous claims of people’s lives being at risk.
Feinstein seemed to have no issue with the government shutting down during the Obama administration, a shutdown that she and her fellow Democrats spun as being the fault of Republicans. Despite proposing budgets, the Democrats pretended that Republicans were the cause of obstruction during that period.
Nevertheless, people didn’t die. There’s a reason for that.
You see, during a government shutdown, not everyone stays home from work. It only impacts people who are considered “non-essential” personnel. People who stay home are the most expendable of those who work for Uncle Sam. Certain functions will continue.
For example, kidnappers don’t get a break during a federal shutdown despite the FBI being part of that budget, and the Secret Service doesn’t stop protecting people just because of a shutdown, either.
People whose job it is to keep people alive keep working. Those folks are called “essential personnel” as a general rule.
Feinstein’s been at this long enough that she has to know that. That means she’s lying. She’s trying to scare people into forcing Republicans’ hands, to make them swallow a deal that will get them crucified by their base despite not having the votes to force it in any other way. They can’t use power, so they’re trying to use fear to manipulate people into believing that all sorts of horrors will result from a shutdown.
The fact is, unless you work for Uncle Sam, you’re barely going to notice it happening in the first place.
