Cuomo Promises to Sue Over New Tax Law

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is not a fan of the GOP tax plan that was recently signed into law. While people will generally get to keep more of their own money, the bill caps the amount of state and local taxes an individual can claim as a deduction on federal taxes.

For Cuomo and his high-tax state, this is a massive problem.

“We believe it is illegal, and we will challenge it in court as unconstitutional,” Cuomo said during his State of the State address. He also claimed it was “the first federal double taxation in history, violative of states’ rights and the principle of equal protection.”

Of course, Cuomo has been silent over how, through those deductions, the rest of the country has subsidized New York’s tax burden for some time now.

You see, Cuomo and his predecessors knew that they could raise state taxes without too much pushback, because those state taxes could be deducted from federal taxes. So New York residents would still pay the same amount in total taxes, with less going to Uncle Sam.

Meanwhile, Americans living in lower-tax states shouldered a disproportional burden of funding the federal government. One might argue that it was a violation of states’ rights and the principle of equal protection. You know, hypothetically.

Now, that door has been closed. States that raise taxes on their citizens now must contend with the fact that those citizens will actually be paying more in total taxes, which means they’re not going to like it. No one likes tax increases except liberal politicians. Well, them and the people who won’t be paying any taxes but still reap benefits.

What Cuomo really doesn’t like is the idea that New Yorkers are about to start taking issue with his state’s wasteful spending and entitlements. The outrageous waste New York has gotten away with for years will suddenly become his problem.

Well, tough. Speaking as someone who lives in a state that’s responsible with its taxes and spending, I’m more than a little sick of paying to keep New York citizens oblivious to reality.

It’s well past time Cuomo and his Democrats run his state like a responsible adult. They won’t change, though.
