Underemployment

Underemployment
—by the Career Drifters, with apologies to the Drifters and “Under the Boardwalk”

Oh, when you graduate this spring and finally leave the university
And your hand is clutching your new Gender Studies degree
Underemployment, working menially
If you’re lucky enough to land a job, that’s where you’ll be

Underemployment, yes it’s a bitter pill
Underemployment, but you didn’t get skills
Underemployment, because employers don’t need
To give employment to social justice screeds
Underemployment—‘ployment

Oh, the Administration says that the economy is doing fine
But it’s not easy to get out of the unemployment line
Underemployment, working menially
Is the best that you’ll be able to do in this recovery.

Underemployment, and you’ve got loans to pay
Underemployment, and they grow every day
Underemployment, but still employers don’t need
To give employment to social justice screeds
Underemployment—‘ployment
