Wasserman Schultz Declares Tea Party the Victor in Battle for Heart of GOP

Democratic National Committee Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) declared that the battle for the heart and soul of the Republican Party has reached its conclusion.

“The civil that’s been war raging in the Republican Party is really over. The tea party has won it. And essentially, they have — they have swallowed the establishment,” Wasserman Schultz told MSNBC today.

“They’ve pulled all of the Republicans in any primary field so far to the right they all embrace varying degrees of extremism. And that’s demonstrative in the agendas that many of these candidates have proposed or that they’ve actually supported as elected officials,” she added.

“So the contrast with our Democratic candidates, whether they are incumbents or — or — or challengers, is very clear. And you know, when it comes to Mitch McConnell today, you know, OK, so he’ll win his primary. That is not a victory for the establishment.”

Wasserman Schultz called the Senate minority leader “the least popular thing in America right now, a Republican in Congress.”

“And there is a neck-and-neck one point difference between Alison Lundergan Grimes, the secretary of state, who is talking about the bread and butter issues that Kentuckyans care about, and Mitch McConnell who has lead the charge on repealing the Affordable Care Act and focusing on distractions that really are designed to take away the attention from the fact that the Republicans have an agenda that Americans simply don’t support.”

She charged that Republicans have been focused “on distractions like a select committee on Benghazi.”

“They focused on distractions like making sure that they can shrink the electorate and make it less likely that people who will vote for Democrats can go to the polls because they have an agenda that is so extreme and — and — and so off the mark that they’ve not been able to win elections. So they are having to point in all different directions.”
