Our Brief National Nightmare is Over: Ted Cruz Will Renounce His Canadian Citizenship

Either it’s August or the Beltway commentariat are being unusually ridiculous, or both. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz’s citizenship has generated an odd volume of commentary over the past few days. There was the Daily Beast reporting on his university dorm bathrobe. “Creepy” was in the title of the piece, which was mainly remarkable only because the Beast found it much easier to find people who remember Cruz in college than remember Barack Obama in college. There was the Washington Post making apples and oranges out of an apples-to-apples comparison.

So Cruz released his birth certificate to the Dallas Morning News. It didn’t take Donald Trump to get it out of him, and it didn’t come in a bizarre, layered file that still stirs up doubt.

Cruz was born in Canada but his mother is American, making him an American citizen at birth, full stop and no need for naturalization. As a natural born citizen he is eligible to be elected president. His situation is common of children born to parents from more than one nation, a situation that I’m very familiar with as half of an international couple myself.

Now Cruz is renouncing his eh for all time.

Texas Republican Sen. Ted Cruz says he will renounce any Canadian citizenship he may have after a newspaper reported he was likely a dual citizen because he was born in Calgary, Alberta to an American mother.

In a statement late Monday, Cruz says he always assumed since he never made an attempt to claim Canadian citizenship, he was only an American citizen. However, he acknowledges it’s possible he also has Canadian citizenship, as reported by The Dallas Morning News.

“Assuming that is true, then sure, I will renounce any Canadian citizenship,” Cruz said. “Nothing against Canada, but I’m an American by birth and as a U.S. senator; I believe I should be only an American.”

The unmysterious Ted Cruz is proving exceptionally interesting to the same media that still won’t ask much about the sitting president, across two elections. Had he been a Democrat and had neither of his parents been American, and had they just slipped him in from Canada illegally, the media would call Ted Cruz a “dreamer.” Instead, they call him “creepy.”
