Speaking in Mexico today, President Barack Obama once again blamed the US for Mexico’s drug war. The man has a fetish for denouncing the US while he stands on foreign soil.
“Most of the guns used to commit violence here in Mexico come from the United States,” President Obama said during a speech at Mexico’s Anthropology Museum. “I think many of you know that in America, our Constitution guarantees our individual right to bear arms. And as president, I swore an oath to uphold that right, and I always will.”
“But at the same time, as I’ve said in the United States, I will continue to do everything in my power to pass common-sense reforms that keep guns out of the hands of criminals and dangerous people. That can save lives here in Mexico and back home in the United States. It’s the right thing to do,” Obama added.
President Obama is wrong on the statistics, just as he is habitually wrong on the percentage of US gun sales that occur outside background checks. Mexico’s drug war guns come from all over the world; many of those that do come from the US first go into the hands of Mexican or other military and law enforcement and are later sold or given to the cartels, or the units defect to the cartels. The Second Amendment has nothing to do with that at all.
He also failed to add that thousands of the guns that did come from the US to Mexico came courtesy one of his own government’s programs: Fast and Furious. He chose to cover Fast and Furious in the cloak of executive privilege last year.
The background check expansion that went down in the Senate last month would have likely had zero impact on any US guns being taken to Mexico.
