Alabama State Rep. Joe Mitchell (D-Mobile) is evidently not a fan at all of voters who back Second Amendment rights. On January 27, Eddie Maxwell sent a mass email to state legislators asking them to resist efforts to curb gun rights. State Rep. Mitchell’s response came from his official email address, and was highly unusual for an elected representative.
Mitchell responded from his public, ALHouse.gov email account at 11:59 p.m., telling Maxwell: “Your folk never used all this sheit (sic) to protect my folk from your slave-holding, murdering, adulterous, baby-raping, incestuous, snaggle-toothed, backward-a**ed, inbreed (sic), imported criminal-minded kin folk.”
Maxwell was taken aback by Rep. Mitchell’s response. The full email chain is at the link.
Setting the racism and profane typo aside, the fact is, Rep. Mitchell has his history wrong. Gun control laws in the the Jim Crow-era south were primarily used by Democrats as a means to keep black Americans from being able to defend themselves.
Southern Democrats have been getting into quite a bit of trouble over the past week. Palm Beach County (FL) Democratic Party vice-chairman Deandre Poole is currently under investigation for having a class that he teaches at Florida Atlantic University stomp on a piece of paper with the name “Jesus” written on it. The Palm Beach County Democratic Party and the Florida Democratic Party have remained silent on the controversy.
