Leaked Document Hints Obama Would Grant Foreign Companies Advantages Over American Companies Operating Within the US

The document, which is from the Obama administration’s ongoing free trade negotiations with Pacific Rim nations, leaked earlier today via the Public Citizen web site. It is posted here. According to Zach Carter at the Huffington Post, the proposal includes a very disturbing idea:

Under the agreement currently being advocated by the Obama administration, American corporations would continue to be subject to domestic laws and regulations on the environment, banking and other issues. But foreign corporations operating within the U.S. would be permitted to appeal key American legal or regulatory rulings to an international tribunal. That international tribunal would be granted the power to overrule American law and impose trade sanctions on the United States for failing to abide by its rulings.

That would appear to be a means of introducing international law into the United States without the American people having had any say in the matter, an obvious violation of our sovereignty. Obama has proven that he is determined to impose cap and trade despite the people’s strong opposition to it. This trade pact might be his means to do that.
