Obama Doubles Down, Bain 'Is What This Election Will Be About'

President Obama took press questions at the conclusion of the NATO summit in Chicago today, and when the subject turned to his campaign’s attacks on Mitt Romney’s time at Bain Capital, the president tried some political tectonics. He argued that the attacks are not a distraction, and that the entire election will quake on what happened at Bain during and after Romney’s time at the helm of the private equity firm.

The president suggests that Romney does not understand the governance side of the economy, because his private sector experience was focused on making money for investors. A very obvious rejoinder to that is, at least Romney has private sector experience. He has government experience as well, and once saved the Olympics. Until being elected president, Barack Obama’s chief experience was in delivering speeches. I’m not saying that that’s not a good skill. But it’s a thin resume by anyone’s standard.

Mitt Romney responds via email:

“President Obama confirmed today that he will continue his attacks on the free enterprise system, which Mayor Booker and other leading Democrats have spoken out against. What this election is about is the 23 million Americans who are still struggling to find work and the millions who have lost their homes and have fallen into poverty. President Obama refuses to accept moral responsibility for his failed policies. My campaign is offering a positive agenda to help America get back to work.”

Barack Obama is welcome to believe that the election will be about Bain Capital. But if he truly believes that, he will lose.
