“It was arguably one of the biggest reveals in the June 30 letter sent by Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance’s office to Dominique Strauss-Kahn’s lawyers: that on the day after the incident at the Sofitel Hotel, the alleged victim had an odd phone conversation with a man detained in an immigration facility in Arizona.

“The conversation and other revelations made prosecutors in the case question whether the alleged victim’s credibility was too shot to continue pushing the case…Enter Amara Tarawally — the name of the man holed up in Arizona… The Daily Beast on Tuesday caught up with Tarawally…According to the story, Tarawally, who is from Sierra Leone, said he met the victim “six or seven years ago,” and described her as “a good lady, very honest.” The Daily Beast said Tarawally said she was not involved in the drug trade or money laundering, and was not a prostitute. He said that she is a devout Muslim. That’s about all the Daily Beast got from Tarawally, who was arrested last summer by authorities in Phoenix in a drug sting.

“The next scheduled development in the case: a court hearing to be held on Aug. 1. Click here for a recent WSJ story on cases that go forward with shaky witnesses; here for a story on the widening rift between prosecutors and Thompson.”
