Today I’m speaking at a high school career fair. I’ve been a print journalist most of my life, and I’m going to have to tell the students if they’re looking to go into the newspaper business “don’t.”

The action these days is in the New Media. And a few papers have even realized that. I was one of those who thought when the Seattle Post-Intelligencer went Web only they would fold in a matter of months. I was wrong, the PI is not only flourishing but profitable for the first time in years. Something the NYT with its bloated management structure and expensive building would do well to remember.
