Oh, the uproar.
Democratic politicians, their base of progressive wraiths, and libertarian-ish types are in full garment-rending mode over the suspension of Jimmy Kimmel. They are framing the routine workplace decision as a monumental free speech issue, all because Americans somehow got the notion that they can say whatever they want to at work.
If you're self-employed, and have no one else around you, sure, go for it. If you're employed by someone else, there are a lot of things that you need to shut up about, especially if that someone else is a for-profit company.
I have spent almost my entire adult life (there was a brief and predictably tragic post-divorce stint in the corporate world) doing stand-up comedy and writing for a living. Free speech is nearer and dearer to my heart than it is to most people's. When words are paying the bills, one learns quickly how they can and cannot be used. Here are some musings on the topic.
