Chevy Chase Goes Off on Lorne Michaels and Current Cast of 'Saturday Night Live'

It would probably be safe to say that we know what Chevy Chase isn’t doing on any given Saturday night.

According to Variety, the original cast member of the once-edgy Saturday Night Live (SNL) had some less-than-charitable things to say about the current state of the show.

Variety says that Chase told the Washington Post that he’s “amazed” that SNL producer Lorne Michaels has “gone so low.”

While Chase had some particularly harsh words for the present cast, he admitted that he hasn’t been a big fan of the show for most of its lengthy run, saying that “after the first two years, it went downhill.” Chase said that was a “horrible thing to say” but that “he didn’t see the same fun thing happening to the cast” after he left the show.

Since the election of Donald Trump, SNL has devolved into a weekly hit piece on the president, rendering it practically unwatchable for about half of America. The writers and cast don’t seem to care because they are entertaining each other, which is a problem most improv ensembles run into. When ensemble comedy is done well it’s brilliant.

The problem is that it is rarely done well.

Despite his curmudgeonly attitude towards the show, Chase did admit that he had fun appearing on the SNL 40th anniversary special and would do the show “again in a minute” if given the opportunity.
