POLIWOOD - Robert Duvall: Why Hollywood's Best Actor Isn't Very "Hollywood"

Frankly, this year’s “Get Low” isn’t one of Robert Duvall’s finest efforts (though he’s very good in it) and is unlikely to generate much Academy enthusiasm, particularly since the actor already has his Oscar for “Tender Mercies.”  But Lionel Chetwynd and I have seized on the opportunity of its release in the new Poliwood to review the career of the man both of us agree is Hollywood’s best actor.  We chose the title “Robert Duvall: Why Hollywood’s Best Actor Isn’t Very ‘Hollywood’” because he certainly breaks the classical Sean Penn left wing thespian mode.  In fact, as I learned after we recorded the show, Duvall described himself on Sixty Minutes as “fanatically libertarian.” I assume he was kidding to some degree because Duvall strikes me as anything but a fanatic.  On the other hand, he is a man of tremendous will – and an extraordinary actor.  Have a look at the show for some amazing clips.  And remember the great “smell of napalm in morning.”
